Cleaning Care Guide
Please follow these instructions before cleaning your oversized blanket hoodie
Pretreat Stains First
The washing machine can push dirt deeper into the fibers. By pretreating any stains first , you will lift the dirt out rather than spreading it around.
- Apply a mild dishwashing soap generously to the affected area. Let is soak for approximately 10 minutes. Alternatively you can use a delicate or natural stain remover. DO NOT RUB – this may only push stain deeper.
- After 10 minutes, blot soap up with a paper towel.
- DO NOT USE CHOLRINE BASED BLEACH OR CHEMICALS
- If the stain is oil based, try some corn starch or baby powder to absorb the oil to help it lift.
Washing Machine Settings
Hand washing isn’t an absolute necessity. We don’t want you to work hard in keeping your hoodie clean. Remember the problem only really arises when you wash the Sherpa lining with other clothes that may cause matting and colour bleeding. ( from other clothes)
Washing machines will do the trick as long as you wash your hoodie blanket alone. We would even go as far to recommend not washing hoodies together. The Get Zipped hoodie likes this time alone to move around freely.
USE COLD WATER WASH (NOT NEGOTIABLE) – It reduces chances of fading and doesn’t stress out the synthetic fibers.
CHOOSE GENTLE CYCLE OR DELICATE CYCLE. You want your hoodie to gently tumble around inside the wash. Remember your hoodie is used to relaxing on the couch – by stressing it out in a vigorous wash , it is going to get all matted.
The gentle cycle also prevents harsh agitation. Top-loading washers use a central spinner to get clothes moving. This creates abrasive damage. Some use impellers, which clean without abrasion.
Keeping the cycle on the gentlest setting available will prevent matting and shedding.
Washing Detergent Choice
To protect the fabric even further, use dish soap instead of your normal detergent. Synthetic fragrances, *softeners, and bleach are too harsh for Sherpa. They can break the fibers down and cause more shedding. You might experience even more shedding as a result.
*To give your hoodie that fresh smell and to add some extra softness, we recommend adding 1/2 cup of your favourite hair conditioner to the wash.
If you have an all-natural detergent that’s gentle and fragrance-free, you can use that. Otherwise, stick to simple dish soap.
Drying Tips
The best way to keep your hoodie damage-free is to hang it up on a clothesline. Air-drying is very gentle on the fabric.
The only downside is that it can take a long time to dry. (especially in winter) You can speed the process up by exposing the blanket to more air from a fan.
If you don’t have a full day to wait for your hoodie to dry up, you can use a standard dryer. The settings should be on the lowest heat possible.
It’s recommended that you turn your dryer on the tumble cycle. Heat and synthetic fibers do not mix well. That horrible smell you sometimes get when fleece and sherpa come out of a hot dryer is from the synthetic fibers burning!
With the tumble drying cycle, there’s very little heat involved. Instead, the dryer tosses the blanket around the barrel to keep it moving. The little heat that is present will help to evaporate any existing moisture.
Knowing how to wash your hoodie can make all the difference. Instead of having to deal with a ruined texture and unsightly colour stains, your oversized blanket hoodie will be as good as new each time.
